Families celebrate together at the Support 4 SDR Celebratory Party 2017 Article from Spring 2017

What a night. Once again, families from all over the UK gathered to celebrate together at the Daventry Court Hotel for the 6th Support4SDR party on Saturday 1st April

We had a gap year in 2016 as Dr Park was unable to attend.

But this April Dr Park, his wife and Deanna Walters travelled once again from St Louis, Missouri to share the evening with many children that he has performed SDR on.

There's an album of photo's from parties over the years online here and loads more photos from families on our facebook page here.

It's a remarkable testament to their commitment to the children and a pleasure for all to spend the night together on the dancefloor.

So, it's a huge round of applause to Dr Park, his family and his team for joining us 'across the pond' for a party.

Roll on 2018.

Channel 4 recently transmitted a series called 'NHS : £2 Billion a week and counting'.

The third episode featured 2 families awaiting a decision on NHS funding for their childs surgery.

It highlighted the current discrepencies in funding in NHS England and NHS Wales and showed there is still work to do before all children that need SDR have access to the surgery.

The docuemntary can be watched on the Channel 4 website here for a limited time.

NHS England has made the fantastic announcemnet that 120 SDR operations will be carried out on the NHS each year as part of the 'Commissioning through Evaluation' programme.

Read how the Daily Mirror covered the story by clicking here.

It represents a huge breakthrough for all the families involved in campaigning for SDR available on the NHS.
Huge thanks to all those that have signed petitions, written letters, fund raised, persuaded and cajoled over the last few years. Whilst the campaign isn't over it's a great step forward and will hopefully lead to the full availability of SDR on the NHS in the coming years.

Taking place at 5 hospitals across the country, the programme aims to gather evidence on the effectiveness of the procedure. Children aged between 3 and 10 who suffer stiffness in their lower limbs, and meet the clinical criteria for treatmeant, can access SDR as part of the initiative.

The 5 hospitals are:
Alder Hey Children's Hospital
Great Ormond Street Hospital
Leeds Teaching Hospital
Nottingham University Hospital
University Bristol Hospital

Article from May 2014
At present (May 2014) we are awaiting an imminent announcement on the availability of SDR on the NHS in England.
As soon as an announcement is made we will publish the information here.
At the time of writing, SDR is not available in the UK on the NHS. The operation is currently performed at several NHS hospitals in England but you must self fund the surgery. Previously, a handful of operations had been funded by some regions of the NHS though provision was very sporadic and access was very limited.
In April 2013 NHS funding for SDR ceased. Since then, a steering group has been working hard to put together criteria and ensure systems are in place to commission and follow up children over a period of time to provide an evidence base which will help inform future central commissioning of SDR on the NHS.
Unfortunately this has taken a long time to get going because despite all the work that has been done, the commissioning boards have very exacting requirements, which are a challenge to get right first time.
It has not yet been decided which hospitals will be providing SDR but they can all bid for commissioning. The selected centres will need to demonstrate that they fulfil the criteria.
NHS England recognise that significantly more than 70 children are on the waiting list for SDR and although the budget cannot be increased, the SDR steering group is exploring whether re-working costings can enable more children to have SDR.
This is beneficial not only because less families would have to self-fund, but also because there would be a larger evidence base which is so needed to secure ongoing provision of NHS funded SDR.
The policy document issued at the time is below.
